Well shaft cut through a cistern channel which was then packed with three amphorae (P 3123, P 3125, P 4201) of 1st or at latest early 2nd c. A.D. (These three amphorae could be considered with F 15:2) ... 3rd-4th c. A.D ... Upper fill to 5.50m produced little pottery and that of 5th c. coins to Honorius 395-423 A.C. ... Lower fill 9.10-9.60m, 4th c. (dump?). No coins.
The excavator believed the well had never been tiled and that lower fill was POU. It seems more likely that tiles were robbed in late 4th c., one 1st c. amphora of packing fell in and then a 4th c. dump was dropped in, capped by tile fragments; later a 5th c. dump on top.

12–15 July 2022 ... This deep stratum (ca. 030m) is delayed Persian destruction cleanup deposited in the 470s B.C. it contains about one generation's worth of pottery, almost exclusively dating between about 500-470 B.C.
The stratum abutted E-W polygonal Wall 8 and was laid down for Post-Persian renovations of the building. The dump of pottery raised the floor level of the building; atop J 1:18 was a layer of crushed bedrock and a renewed floor surface.

Tiled well near the SW corner of the market square between the Southwest Fountain House and the Great Drain, three fills noted: lower fill of earth and stones with a few fragments only of coarse pottery (none inventoried, containers 66-71); middle filling a heavy deposit primarily of table ware, apparently a gradual accumulation; upper supplementary fill. Although carefully constructed this shaft seems never to have served as a well but only as a rubbish dump for neighboring establishments.

The well had been filled at once with a miscellaneous dump which contained some marble chips, a great many animal bones and some sawn-off ends of animal bones such as were found in House F and to the north of it, and a quantity of very fragmentary pottery of the late 5th c. ... The fill in the mouth of the well, evidently thrown in after the deep dump had settled, was slightly later. |

Well is ca. 1.20m in diameter, dug into bedrock. Excavated to depth of roughly -8.00m; sides started collapsing and thus did not dig to full depth. Some stone-lining, ... June 15-16, 17-31 July 1972 ... At very top, for a depth of ca. 0.60m had nondescript late pottery, not kept.
POU, for depth of ca. 4.80m, includes many whole or nearly whole coarse water jugs (many still in tins), a little glazed pottery, including lamp fragments and much coarse ware of the 13th century A.D. ... Classical dump fill of the 5th-4th c. |
Washed-in filling at the base of the Acropolis cliffs, some 7m. east of the Klepsydra; the fill was characterized by teh fragments of a series of red-figured oinochoai of special shape, of the late 5th ... Late 3rd c. B.C ... The filling which had been undisturbed since antiquity, was in places as much as 0.80m deep and produced a great quantity of pottery. Much of the pottery was coarse, fragments of rooftiles, storage jars and so on; but it included fragments of at least eight very curious oinochoes.
... Although the character of the pottery precluded the possibility that this was a sanctuary dump, it seemed probable at first that the pit was in part artificial, and that the pottery had been deliberately deposited there. |
