On top side: kantharos or calyx-krater (ribbed cul, stem, and foot) standing ... Probably late 5th century B.C ... For a kantharos on the lid of a pyxis Type D, see Tampa, Fla., ex Maplewood, N.J., Noble (seen from the side); the one found in a grave in Athens at Aiolou and Lykourgos Streets (Δελτ 29, 1973--1974 [1979], pl. 94: ε , seen from the side and placed on a table). |
Lower part of body, all of ring base. Streaky brownish black glaze on inside. Glaze on outside brownish in places. Dent on right altar. P.H. 0.122; diam. of base 0.125. L. Talcott, AJA 49, 1945, p. 526, ... Ca. 425 B.C ... The same subject appears on a well-preserved contemporary oinochoe found in a grave on Lykourgos Street (Δελτ 20, 1965 [1967], pl. 56: γ). |

Talcott, Hesperia 8, 1939, pp. 268--269, figs. 1, 2 (the fragments have been relettered since this ... Ca. 470-460 B.C ... If these are maenads, Webster (Hesperia 29, 1960, p. 255) suggests that the man is either Lykourgos or Pentheus. |
