Two non-joining rim and neck fragments from each side of the vase. Dull glaze, abraded on rim on b. P.H. a) 0.055, b) 0.053; max. dim. a) 0.096, b) 0.089. Schleiffenbaum, Volutenkrater, p. 323, cat. no ... Probably mid-5th century B.C ... Fragment a comes from near the handle zone because there is a reserved area to the left of the ornament, a chain of upright lotuses and encircled palmettes. Fragment b (from the other side) preserves part of a lotus-palmette festoon.

| Most of the neck, with moulded rib at top and another lighter at base, and most of the wide, circular mouth, like a bowl with flattened lip, preserved, mended from many pieces. Presumably from a vase similar ... 12-15 April 1939 ... The ridge at the base of the lip is reserved on its underside; that at the base of the neck is set off by a reserved groove above and below.
Ornament: running right around the neck, except at the center back, beneath the handle, a double lotus and palmette band.

Fragment b preserves the buttocks and a little of the drapery of the other youth on this side and behind him, a bit of the handle ornament (part of vine and lotus). The rest of fragment a gives most of the lotus-palmette configuration at the handle and part of two figures on the other side of the cup: most of a youth (legs missing), nude but for a chlamys over his left shoulder and a fillet around his head, standing to right, a spear over his left shoulder. |

Two non-joining fragments, a preserving the shoulder, as well as the very low speira base. Fragment a is mended from many fragments, with the missing pieces restored in plaster and painted. Streaky, grainy ... Ca. 425-420 B.C ... Behind 2 is part of a lotus-palmette configuration. ... This vase was without handles. The lotus-palmette configuration appeared between the right Muse on fragment a and the one on fragment b, and thus, when the vase was complete, the ornament was about opposite the figures of Apollo and Marsyas.
