This epithet is not attested elsewhere, but it must express the idea of Sign-giving Zeus from σημειον or σημα, a sign of the gods. That a weather sign is meant is suggested by the fact that the term διοσημία was used later, especially at Athens to denote atmospheric phenomena: cf. Cook, Zeus II, pp. 4-5.
