[Agora Object] P 15843: Red Figure Oinochoe Fragment

Fragmentary lower body, mended from several pieces. For the shape cf. P 15840 and P 15841. Reserved: groove above and below ring at junction of body and foot; underside of foot (the foot itself missing) ... 12-15 April 1939 ... At the back, elaborate palmette and tendril ornament. Figured scene (left to right): next to the handle ornament, much of a youthful male figure standing right, partly draped in an himation (missing: the upper front part of the body, the head save for a few brown curls at the nape, and parts of the lower legs). Approaching him at a gallop, a quadriga; eight forefeet and part of a chariot wheel remain. Beyond the chariot and again next to the handle ornament, a second draped standing figure, right, apparently similar to the first; feet and lower drapery only preserved. Technique: relief contour for the horses' feet and the chariot wheel; not for the standing figures or the ornament.

Part of rim preserved. At the top, two deep grooves, below them, a band of guilloche pattern and two more grooves. A large vine leaf pointed down interrupts the guilloche band and extends some way below ... 9 June 1933 ... Below the band and right of the leaf is the corner of a panel with a fairly elaborate floral ornament. Coarse brownish clay, the outside wheel-turned.

At center of floor a device stamp, broken away at right: crescent-shaped ornament with in-curving tips and a projecting diamond-shaped point between the tips. ... Buff clay; dull black glaze inside and out; base left rough from wheel; floor irregular.

Fragmentary; about a quarter preserved; the profile complete to within the foot-ring. Restored in plaster. Low plate with broad flat floor; heavy plain ring foot, plain turned up rim. On floor, traces ... 11 May 1939 ... On floor, traces of two wheel-run grooves and an oval stamp with obscure device (one of five?). ... Possibly Pergamene; shape and floor ornament suggest this, but the clay is unusual.

Keel is unusually marked for a bowl of this type; rim is slightly convex in profile with three wheel-run grooves just below lip, and one just above the keel. ... Coarse, pinkish-buff clay; dull glaze-paint, red on inside and upper side walls, brownish-yellow on rim; traces of spiral ornament on rim, in white.
