Mended from many pieces; the lip entirely missing and the handle save for its upper attachment. Strengthened with plaster at the back and on the shoulder; pieces missing throughout the body. Palmettes ... August-September 1932 ... In the center of the figured panel, a fawn, right, standing in front of a palm tree. To the left, a bearded figure, wreathed and cloaked, faces the fawn. In his left hand he holds a lyre; with his right he grasps the end of the animal's tail. A similar figure (head missing but from the drapery possibly female) faces the fawn at the right of the picture and holds out her right hand toward his head.

Rather open conical form with upturned rim (slight ... 4-5 July 1946 ... Very thin fawn-brown clay with fine mica, brown slip (purplish-brown on inside) ending halfway down exteriors.

Then come the heads with diadems of two maenads to right, the one on the right with a tympanon, and at the far right are parts of objects that look like torches (not illustrated). ... Dilute glaze: nebris; fawn. White: Dionysos's fillet; dots on other fillets; jewelry; fruit of plants; dots near top of torch.

Overlapping the locks of hair at ... Ca. 490 B.C ... Cf., e.g., the maenad with the fawn skin over her chiton who holds both a thyrsos and a snake on Munich 8732 = 2344 by the Kleophrades Painter (ARV2 182, 6; Paralip. 340, 6; Addenda 186); also the huge serpent held by Dionysos on Louvre Cp 10748, where the god attacks a falling giant (ARV2 187, 55; Addenda 188).
