Warrior (part of face, right hand with sword) to left, the sword overlapping an unintelligible bit of reserve (skin[?]). Relief contour ... Ca. 480-470 B.C ... The potting lines and the beginning of the downturn on the underside make clear that this fragment comes from a large flat lid, similar perhaps to the one in Princeton (86.34) attributed by Guy to Syriskos, which covered a dinos or a lebes gamikos and depicts the centauromachy with Kaineus. |

A, male pursuing a woman. Parts of three figures remain: at the left, a bit of the himation and chiton, and left foot of a woman running ... Ca. 460 B.C ... What remains on 183 suggests an ambitious composition, with considerable overlapping of the figures and hence seems a bit closer to the Boreas Painter than to the Florence Painter, who, except for the Centauromachy on his namepiece (Florence 81268 = 3997: ARV2 541, 1; Paralip. 385, 1; Addenda 256), tends to prefer quieter and simpler compositions. |
