Added purple freely used; an added color, presumably white, was used for the long dress of one charioteer, for the flesh of at least one of the figures, and for shield devices. |

Amazon (head with elaborate headdress, right arm, most of torso) standing frontally, facing to left. It is difficult to ... Ca. 430-420 B.C ... The best that I have been able to find are these: New York, M.M.A. 23.160.64, an unattributed volute-krater fragment that shows a right calf with legging and foot similar to 982 (D. von Bothmer, Amazons in Greek Art, Oxford 1957, pl. 82:6) and Louvre AM 94, an unattributed white ground lekythos depicting an Amazon to right, her left leg raised and bent, the foot resting on a stone (Bothmer, pl. 84:2), a reversal of the position on 982, the main difference being that the torso of the Amazon on 982 is frontal, that on Louvre AM 94 is in profile. |

The fragment preserves the lower right leg, shown frontally, of someone wearing Thracian boots with fur tops, and moving to right, because in the lower right there is the ... Ca. 460-450 B.C ... Trumpeter (most of face, a little of ... Ca. 480 B.C ... Whether to call the trumpeter a Greek warrior or an Amazon is difficult. In Amazons in Greek Art, Oxford 1957, p. 156, Bothmer opted for an Amazon, presumably because of the beardlessness and the absence of cheekpieces on the helmet (they could be turned up). |
