Herakles attacks four Amazons, the first of whom has fallen on her face while the second rushes forward before a pair of Amazons striding in parallel formation. ... Dressed in spotted lion skin he pierces his nearest attacker with a curved spear with a wavy haft. The Amazons have spears in their raised hands and wear gaily decorated chitons. ... White, on exterior for flesh of Amazons, markings on lion skin and for the teeth of the lion, chiton of Herakles, and for the dots on the rims of the shields of the Amazons; on the interior, for dots and indentations of tongue pattern.

Outside, beneath the edge of ... August-September 1932 ... White for the flesh of the Amazons; the crests of the helmets of all the figures and circle devices on all the shields; the cloak of the mounted warrior. The legs of the Amazons are painted in black only as far as the knee.

About half the lid preserved, mended from many pieces. Gently domed lid with down-curved rim; globular knob handle finished with a small straight-sided finial. The underside reserved, decorated with a ... 9 June 1939 ... The figured zone shows a battle scene with single combatants and chariots: probably Greeks and Amazons. Added purple freely used; an added color, presumably white, was used for the long dress of one charioteer, for the flesh of at least one of the figures, and for shield devices.

Fragment of shoulder and body. Much of the drawing has flaked. Max. dim. 0.077. Amazon (head with elaborate headdress, right arm, most of torso) standing frontally, facing to left. It is difficult to ... Ca. 430-420 B.C ... The best that I have been able to find are these: New York, M.M.A. 23.160.64, an unattributed volute-krater fragment that shows a right calf with legging and foot similar to 982 (D. von Bothmer, Amazons in Greek Art, Oxford 1957, pl. 82:6) and Louvre AM 94, an unattributed white ground lekythos depicting an Amazon to right, her left leg raised and bent, the foot resting on a stone (Bothmer, pl. 84:2), a reversal of the position on 982, the main difference being that the torso of the Amazon on 982 is frontal, that on Louvre AM 94 is in profile.

Trumpeter (most of face, a little of ... Ca. 480 B.C ... Whether to call the trumpeter a Greek warrior or an Amazon is difficult. In Amazons in Greek Art, Oxford 1957, p. 156, Bothmer opted for an Amazon, presumably because of the beardlessness and the absence of cheekpieces on the helmet (they could be turned up).
