Title:   Pyxis with Lid

Description:   The body mended from several fragments; the cover intact; the horses broken off but complete.
a) Flat-bottomed pyxis with slightly convex side wall flanged inside the rim to receive the lid. Flange and lid pierced for tying. On side wall, from bottom: two narrow bands, row of dots, three black bands. Wide zone divided by cross-hatched bands between vertical lines into square and narrow metopes, alternating. In squares, swastikas with linked dotted circles in their arms; in oblongs, checker- board pattern. Above, narrow black band, and on flange, two. On bottom, three narrow rings with interrupted frieze outside; wavy line, dotted on both sides; dot rosettes inside and outside hollows; dotted cross inside three narrow concentric rings.
b) Lid: shaped like an inverted shallow plate. Around rim: parallel stroke series alternating with St. Andrew's crosses, three narrow bands, row of dots, three bands, row of dots, three bands. On flat center part, which has a hole in the middle, three horses, entirely glazed except bands and linked dots on chests and necks, rows of dots between lines down manes, spine, and tails. In exergue front and back, between swastikas, parallel stroke series.
Buff slip, glaze black to reddish.
