| Title: | Black Figure Amphora Fragments | |
| Category: | Pottery | |
| Description: | Panel amphora. Early black figure style. Rosettes on rim, palmettes above panels. Five pieces join to the large neck fragment; nine others, of which three join together, probably belong lower down. The rim is preserved save for small chips, also the arch of one handle. The parts preserved indicate a group of warriors in one panel, in the other a pair of lions, their heads turned back to the border. On one side the top of a crested helmet, on the other parts of the two lion heads and of the filling ornament: two large lotus buds and a central rosette. Three of the odd fragments appear to belong to the warrior group: bits of shields and of a human figure. The rest belong to the lions: three together give most of the body of the right figure; two, bits of curving tail by the edge of the panel; the remaining one, the nose and chin of the left hand lion with part of a lotus-bud filling ornament. Free use of accessory red, including two bands on the glazed inside of the amphora mouth. Incision for interior details. | |
